Can you imagine the shock of the residents in the small communities as the RONA MS Bike Tour rides through their peaceful, quiet town? As the Bike Tour grows larger, we need to address many issues, while at the same time, remaining respectful of the residents in those small towns. Being proactive with safety is one area we can focus on now. With that in mind, the Bike Marshall position was born. This position is made up of individuals who are registered cyclists on the route. The Bike Marshalls can assist with friendly reminders to all riders of riding etiquette and safety, therefore, making the ride safer for everyone. This position is critical to the enjoyment, safety and the continuation of the RONA MS Bike Tour.
Bike Marshall Purpose
Bike Marshalls are safety-focused, experienced and enthusiastic registered riders who are Good Will Ambassadors on the bike tour. They will perform two important functions for the RONA MS Bike Tour. As cyclists on the road, they are first a Good Will ambassador; and second a Safety ambassador.
Bike Marshall Responsibilities
- Good Will Ambassador
Bike Marshalls are official representatives of the RONA MS Bike Tour. They are encouraging to other cyclists and volunteers along the bike tour route and foster a “good will” among the participants.
- Safety Ambassador
Bike Marshalls act as a Safety Ambassador by sharing cycling advice and encouraging safe cycling behaviors. Bike Marshalls may also identify unsafe cyclists to the Bike Tour Committee members.
A Bike Marshall must demonstrate safety and respect of all cyclists on the route. They must always maintain a positive attitude when reminding cyclists of safe riding techniques and the rules of the road. Remember, you will be highly visible and, therefore, Bike Marshalls must always follow the rules of the road, ride responsibly and always set a good example, on and off the road.
The Bike Marshalls will meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be willing to promote safe cycling
- Be enthusiastic about cycling safety
- Complete a cycling safety class provided through the MS society
- Obtain a minimum of 80% on the safety exam provided at the end of the cycling safety class
