Frequently Asked Questions about the RONA MS Bike Tour

What time should we be in Airdrie? Where is the start?

Two-day tour, 160 - 180 kilometers - Saturday, June 7, 2008. Our start location is at the Aridrie Recreation & Wellness Centre located at 800 East Lake Blvd. See map.

Participants should arrive no later than 8:00 am to ensure that you have time to check in. You will be able to get some juice, coffee and a light snack before you ride. The ride departs at 9:00 am.

One-day tour, 75 kilometers - Sunday, June 8, 2008. Be at the start location no later than 8:30 am to ensure that you have time to check in. There will be snacks served to you before you depart at 9:30 am.

How hard is the route? Are there hills?

Both the one day and two day routes are considered intermediate to advanced rides. For the one day, 75 km tour, if you ride 15 - 30 km twice per week one month prior to the event you should be well prepared. For the two day, 180 km ride, if you ride 30 - 50 km at least two times per week and enjoy it then you will probably find that this tour is the correct level for you. If you don't ride very often, or haven't ridden in a long time, then this route may be challenging. Yes, Calgary is in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains - so we have several large hills.

Are there any extra perks for High Fundraisers?

Yes there are! Anyone raising over $1,500 has the opportunity to stay in our townhouse units instead of the dorm rooms. These are the favorite accommodations of our cyclists. Riders in this fundraising category can also get an invite into an event just for high fundraisers. Last year, we played our own version of Deal or No Deal and had complementary martinis.

Are there RONA MS Bike Tour training rides?

The Bike Shop willl be organizing a preview ride May 24. The ride will begin at the Airdrie Recreation Centre at 9:00 am and will end at noon. You will have an opportunity to ride a portion of the route to prepare yourself for the tour. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the ride and meet in the parking lot by the traffic lights.

Do I need to carry my luggage and tents with me?

No, we have a truck that takes your belongings up to Olds College for you, just make sure you label them well.

Do I need to bring bedding if I am staying in the dorm?

No, the bedding and towels are supplied for you.

If I am tenting, is there a shower I can use?  Do I need to bring food?

If you are tenting you need a tent, sleeping bags and towels, you have access to the showers at the college and the meals are included - so you don't need to bring food.

Can I park an RV at the College?  Can my spouse drive up and meet me?

You can park an RV at the College, the registration fee is the same as tenting.   Yes, your spouse can drive up and meet you there.  If you want your spouse to join you for the evening meal call the MS Society office and arrange to purchase an extra meal ticket.

Why do I have to raise a minimum of $275 in pledge money to be able to ride?

The RONA MS Bike Tour is a fund raising event for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Calgary Chapter.   The funds raised are for research into the cure for multiple sclerosis.  The more money we raise the closer we will be to a cure.  Because of the cost of running an event like a Bike Tour, we set a minimum pledge level to help us make our event successful.

Can I ride the 100 km distance to Olds College and then turn around and ride back to Calgary all on the first day?

No. We don't encourage anyone to ride our tour all in the first day.  You may be able to ride the 175 km in one day but this is a tour - not a race!  Alberta Transportation insists that we do not race on our tour, and they also insist that we have a certain level of safety and support in place for our cyclists.  You may have checkpoints and support vehicles on your 100 km to Olds College, however those checkpoints start closing along the route as soon as the last cyclist headed to Olds College is past.   Any cycling that you do in the opposite direction would be done with no support in place.  We don't want you out there on your own, and that wouldn't follow the guidelines set for us by Alberta Transportation.

I'm a vegetarian, or I have food allergies is there going to be food there that I can eat?

We do have some vegetarian selections however if you have some specific dietary needs please call us and let us know.

My partner would like to drive up to Olds College and meet me later for dinner at the College.  Is this possible?

Yes, just contact the MS Society office to arrange for the purchase of a meal ticket.

Do I collect my pledge money by how far I've biked?

No, we suggest you collect pledges at the time you ask people for them. We also recommend that get people to sponsor you for a flat rate. This will save you time because you don't have to go back to them later.  When you have at least the minimum of $250, you can stop in to the MS office to get your T-shirt before the ride.  If you qualify for your $1,000 club cycling jersey, bring your money in and you can wear the jersey on the ride.

What happens if I hurt myself and can't ride in the tour? Will my registration fee be reimbursed?

Registration fees will not be refunded, however, if you have already collected money from sponsors you can still bring in the money to us and qualify for prizes or we can send you a tax receipt.  Simply contact our office and let us know the details.

Can I bring my money and get my prizes at the Bike Tour?

We will only be accepting pledge money for anyone coming from out-of-town and yes, we will be giving out t-shirts, jersey and shorts at the site, however if you bring your money into the office early, you will get your pick of t-shirt sizes.

When do I have to have all my money in?

All pledge money must be submitted by June 25, 2008.

When can I pick up my prize?

Gift certificates will be mailed to you, any other prizes such as the t-shirt, you may pick up at our office. To save costs, we do not mail prizes other than gift certificates to participants.

Is there an age requirement to ride?

Two day cyclists must be 14 years or older to ride in the tour. One day cyclists must be 12 years or older to ride. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult riding in the tour.
